Girl's Redskins basketball player Abby Watson earns Female Gamer of the Week
Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc. and the Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week's Female Gamer of the Week to Abby Watson of Hurricane High School.
Abby Watson is a starting sophomore for the Hurricane High Redskins girl's basketball team. Even though she is only in her second year as a high school athlete, she is playing like an experienced veteran. In the past three games she has averaged a double with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a 48-30 win over Woodrow Wilson; 22 points and 13 rebounds in a 69-58 loss to Parkersburg; and 29 points and 10 rebounds in a 51-48 win over South Charleston.
To add to those numbers, Abby made 14 of the 29 points in the South Charleston game that were scored in the fourth quarter, made two free throws with 13 seconds left in the game to seal the win and added five blocks as well.
"It has been a very rough first couple of games with very hard competition, but things are looking good," Abby said about her team's start to the season. "Our strengths have been our fast breaks. We are a very athletic team and we're fast, so we use that to our advantage."
First-year Coach Natasha Lowe has been very impressed with the effort from her team. "They never give up, even when they are behind. They try to give 110 percent until the end."
As for Abby's performances this season, she says that "I am playing where my team needs me, which is rebounding and scoring right now, but I get a lot of help from my teammates in all areas." Coach Lowe could not say enough about this young star athlete. "She has taken her leadership role to the next level as a sophomore. She is more of a leader by example, but she knows when to talk to the girls, pick them up and keep them motivated also," said Coach Lowe. We also asked Coach Lowe where Abby's strengths most benefit the team. She said that "Abby knows how and when to make something happen. She brings that extra spark when we most need it."
Abby said the person who most inspires her is Kendra Wallace, a former Nitro High standout and now senior at High Point University. "She is smart and very hard working. I have never seen her taking a day off during the summers. She is one of my good friends and I really look up to her."
Abby would like to play college basketball at the Division 1 level and possibly throw discus and shot put during the track seasons. She is currently a member of the soccer, basketball and track teams at Hurricane, has a 4.0 GPA and attends The Catholic Church of the Ascension in Teays Valley.
Look for other local area high school athletes to be named next week's Female Gamer of the week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc. and the Putnam Herald.
