Phil Hudson Memorial Scholarship fundraiser planned

Feb. 15, 2013 @ 12:02 PM

HURRICANE — An event to raise money for the Phil Hudson Memorial Scholarship Fund has been planned for Tuesday, March 12, at the First State Bank Community Meeting Room, 3754 Teays Valley Road.

The event, called “Uncork and Create,” will lead participants through the step-by-step process of creating a 16-by-20-inch work of art. There will also be a silent auction. Participants are invited to bring their favorite wine or beverage to sip while they paint.

Uncork and Create has created an outdoor scene specifically for participants in this event to recreate in honor of Hudson, who was an avid outdoorsman.

Hudson, who died on Jan. 17, 2012, was a 1985 graduate of Hurricane High School, where he was an outstanding track star and an all-American football player. After graduating, he continued to play football at West Virginia Tech and was a four-year starter earning election to the Kodak All-American Football Team. He was later inducted into the WVIT Athletic Hall of Fame.

Hudson married his high school sweetheart, Kimberly Johnson Hudson, and they had two daughters, Emily, who is a sophomore at Hurricane High, and Abbey, who is an eighth-grader at Hurricane Middle. While raising his family, Hudson remained involved in Hurricane athletics, and he became a sponsor of Project Redskin, a community sponsored group that has provided the funding for the improvement of the athletic facilities at Hurricane High School.

“Phil was extremely proud to contribute to this program in order to help better the student athletes in Hurricane,” according to a news release about the fundraiser. “As a result of his passion for Hurricane High School athletes, this Memorial Scholarship has been set up in his name.”

This will be the first year the scholarship will be given. It will help a male and a female Hurricane High School senior with college expenses.

The cost of Uncork and Create is $60. It is limited to 60 participants.Doors open at 6 p.m., and painting will be from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. All proceeds will go directly to the scholarship fund.
