Juvenile diabetes support group, walk kick-off planned in Hurricane
HURRICANE — The West Virginia Branch of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is planning a support group and walk kick-off event at the Valley Wave Pool Park Community Building in Hurricane from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, March 9.
All adults and children with type 1 diabetes, as well as their family and friends are encouraged to attend. The public is welcome, as well.
Dr. Sarah Jarvis will speak about the psychological impacts of type 1 diabetes and will lead a question-and-answer session.
There will be activities for children, snacks and opportunities to connect with other families in the local area affected by juvenile diabetes. This family networking is a key component to the outreach program being undertaken by the WV Branch of of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, according to a news release.
Family team packages and registration information also will be available on March 9 for the Annual Walk For a Cure to be held at the State Capitol Complex on May 19. WV Branch volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about family teams and walk registration.
JDRF has a Bag of Hope program in which newly diagnosed children are presented with a colorful backpack containing “Rufus” the stuffed diabetic bear, a meter and test strips and books, dvds and other helpful information. Diabetic children who have not yet received a Bag of Hope will be given one at the March 9 event.
The WV Branch also has begun a mentor program in which children with type 1 diabetes are matched with an older teen or adult type 1 mentor; type 1 teens are matched with adult type 1 mentors and parents of newly diagnosed and younger children are matched with parents who are experienced at managing their child’s blood sugar. There will be an opportunity to connect children and teens with type 1 mentors and for adult type 1s to be assigned to mentor a type 1 child or teen at the March 9 event.
