L&R serving up a mix of BBQ styles
HURRICANE -- Ten years ago Lori and Roger Coffee started their own catering business and now they think they have the best kept secret in Hurricane.
In November of 2010 they acquired the building that was formerly the home of Aunt B's Bakery and used it to open a small diner in spring of 2011. Now L&R's Custom Catering is serving an assortment of barbecued pulled pork, beef brisket, spareribs, and other favorites.
"We were behind the Burger King location for six years in Teays Valley," Roger Coffee said. "We only did catering and take-out but we had no dining area. When this became available we found out through a friend and came here. We then built a smoker."
"My husband and I were in totally different professions," Lori Coffee added. "I was in graphic arts and he was working in industrial services. After we were married we used to always entertain and cook for people. We ended up moving here for family reasons and took a chance by starting our own business. We're still doing it today."
Their barbecue is a mix of styles.
"I've lived in Oklahoma, Texas, and I've been in Georgia and Memphis," Roger Coffee said. "So I sort of mixed them all together. The smoker that we built uses both direct and indirect heat. We made it out of a gas pipe put in the ground in 1907 and is made out of forged steel which holds heat better than recycled steel. We use oak for heating and a variety of woods such as pecan, apple, sassafras, and cherry for flavor. We also have a tomato-based sauce that we have made special for us."
They specialize in pulled pork ($4.75-$5.75) and beef brisket ($5.75 to $6.75). Customers can also enjoy barbecue platters served with two sides and a roll such as pulled pork ($8.75), pulled chicken ($8.75), and spareribs ($10.50). Customers looking for a quick lunch can enjoy two hot dogs for $4 topped with mustard, onion, slaw, and a homemade chili sauce.
L&R Custom catering also offers an expansive catering menu including salads, fruit and veggie trays, sweets, soups, and hot meals such as southern fried chicken and home-style meatloaf. As Roger Coffee is a US Army veteran the shop is full of military memorabilia including an honor wall filled with ribbons, medals, pictures and other gifts given by 59 different veterans.
