Kanawha Valley DAR member earns state award
Carolyn Rabalais of the Kanawha Valley Chapter NSDAR is the first recipient of the “Avis C. Marcum West Virginia Outstanding DAR Service for Veterans Award.”
As chairman of the DAR Service for Veterans Committee for the Kanawha Valley Chapter, Rabalais oversaw the donation of more than $14,000 in goods in support of veterans last year and spearheaded the effort to collect personalized Christmas gifts for 100 veterans at the Veterans Home in Barboursville — while working full-time.
“Carolyn’s qualities exemplify those shown by Avis Marcum — selfless service and a desire to make life easier for our veterans,” Cheryl Brown, West Virginia State Chairman of the DAR Service for Veterans Committee, said in a news release.
Marcum, who passed away in March 2011, was a member of the Westmoreland Chapter NSDAR, which meets monthly in Ceredo, W.Va. She was a long-time VAVS (Veterans Administration Voluntary Services) Representative to the Huntington VA Medical Center and served as a volunteer at the hospital for several years, earning more than 1,000 hours of service credit.
