Sharks celebrate a great season
HURRICANE, W.Va. -- Sleepy Hollow's Sharks ended their summer swim season near the top in the Greater Kanawha Valley Summer Swimming League Championship.
Deb Dearing, swim team director and second-year swim coach, said even though the Sharks scored as runners up at the closing of the four-day event, the group held their own up through the competition's last day, where they saw Cross Lanes inch ahead in the end with a final score of 4,089.5 points. The Sharks took second with 3,049.5, a first for the group.
"We can tell we are growing in our teams, and each swimmer is growing in their skills," Dearing said. "We're really proud of the learning that has occurred."
Active only six weeks during the summer, the club had a winning record this season while also breaking 19 pool records, Dearing said.
"We really just strive on having fun. It's about their personal best," Dearing said. "Our first goal is to swim our best no matter what that looks like and then we focus as a team to see what else we can do."
With 64 families and more than 100 swimmers participating in club meets this season, Dearing said the group is always looking to the future with hopes of recruiting new swimmers.
"Swimming is such a great sport for any other sport that you do because you build so much muscle and endurance," Dearing said. "It's a cross-functional sport. And once you learn the basics, anyone can do it."
