Howerton of Teays Valley recognized

Oct. 11, 2013 @ 09:15 AM

Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc. & The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week's Gamer of the Week award to Marshall Howerton of Teays Valley Christian School.

The Lions of Teays Valley Christian have had an up and down boy's soccer season this year. However, they have shown lots of improvement over the course of the season and look to make a splash in the WVCAT tournament.

A shining light on the team, in more ways than one, is junior midfielder, striker and captain, Marshall Howerton.

"I always try to give it my best effort and get everyone involved and help my teammates play to the best of their abilities," says Howerton. Marshall went on to say, "I really want everybody else, the younger teams especially, to see just how much you can improve if you work hard at it."

Head soccer coach, Matt Davis, couldn't be happier with Howerton's play this season.

"He has proven very valuable for us as a player and as a leader on our team. His play on the field speaks for itself; he's our leading goal scorer and really all our offense is set up through him."

When asked what has led to his success on the field this year Howerton answered, "I've played travel soccer since I was very young, so I feel that has really helped me come along in my skills and understanding of the game. Also, a lot of our younger guys have really stepped up this year and have helped lead our team down the stretch."

Obviously, you can't win games with just one player, so the progression of the team is a must in any sport. When asked what they do when at their best, Marshall said this, "We possess the ball, we knock it around and create and finish chances. We are looking to win our next couple of games and build up some momentum going into the WVCAT tournament. Hopefully we can drive up as an underdog and do some good things there."

Marshall is not only a success on the soccer field, but also in the classroom and in his everyday life. He has a 4.0 GPA and is a leader for his classmates and peers.

Coach Davis had this to say about his junior star, "He's an extremely hard worker; he's very conscientious both in the class room and on the soccer field. He approaches the game in a very intellectual way; his understanding of the game is far beyond his age and experience. He has outstanding character and does the right things both on and off the field.

Marshall's faith in God is something that can't be denied. When asked what or who helps him be everything he is, he answered, "God supports me. He gives me the motivation I need, He watches over me and allows me to have fun and enjoy playing the game of soccer that I love so much."

Please look for other local area high school athletes to be named next week's Gamer of the Week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald.

Matt Smith, MS, ATC, CSCS, is the Potential PLUS Program Director at Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc.
