Hurricane's Watson named Cager of the Week

Feb. 03, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc. and the Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week's Cager of the Week award to Abby Watson of Hurricane High School.

There weren't many people who thought the Hurricane girls' basketball team would be where they are now after a four-win season last year and a new head coach to start this year. But, the 12-6 Redskins are in great shape going into the last part of the season before sectionals begin. Last week they had one blowout victory over Lincoln County and had an exciting win over St. Albans, 58-57.

A main contributor in not only those wins but in the team's success this season has been freshman standout Abby Watson. She netted 17 and 20 points last week and is currently the team's leading rebounder and 2nd leading scorer.

Coach Estep commented on Abby, saying, "Abby went from one of our leading perimeter players to our leading post player this season. She's had to do some maturing to adjust to the speed and physicality of the game but has had tremendous attitude and work ethic all season."

Abby also commented on her play this season, saying,"I've just been where my team needs me. So if that is on the outside shooting or down low getting rebounds and making post shots, that's where I'll play. It's a much rougher game in the post, so I have had to get rougher, bigger, and stronger to get rebounds and score."

The Redskins only have four games left in the regular season before the MSAC and sectional games begin. Abby feels if she and her team come out strong and play hard, that their success will continue into the post season. "We have been coming together a lot as a team lately, and practicing really hard to prepare for our next games. One thing that coach has taught us is that we practice like we play and we don't feel sorry for ourselves."

Coach Estep has been very pleased with the effort his girls have given him throughout this season. "These girls have gotten these wins through hard work and determination; they give me outstanding effort and attitude. We have high expectations, but our season is not based on wins and losses; our season is based on effort and attitude."

Abby has found much of her inspiration from her family and coach this season. "My whole family has been very supportive and Coach Estep has been pushing me very hard, trying to make me be the best I can be in practice and in games." Abby is also part of the soccer and track teams at Hurricane High and has a 4.0 GPA.

Look for Abby and other local area high school athletes to be named next week's Cager of the Week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and the Putnam Herald.
