Big Reds beat Generals 3-1 in closely contested soccer game

October 30, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

WINFIELD -- It's the kind of match-up you dread -- facing a highly rated opponent in the opening round of the playoffs.

That's the assignment the Winfield boys soccer team drew in the first round of the AAA sectional playoffs -- a match at defending state champion and 4th ranked Parkersburg on Oct. 20.

The Big Reds beat the Generals 3-1 in a closely contested game. It was the second loss to Parkersburg this year. On Sept. 4, they beat the Generals 4-1.

With the loss, Winfield finished the season at 6-7-5.

Winfield played Parkersburg dead even for the first 18 minutes of the opening half. At 21:13, however, the officials called a hand ball in the box on Winfield's Jeremy Mitchell, resulting in a penalty kick. Parkersburg's Brian Runyan cashed in and put the Big Reds up 1-0.

The even play continued through the rest of the half until Zack Bowman of Parkersburg headed in a perfect corner kick with :26 left on the clock, giving the Big Reds a 2-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Winfield didn't give up and continued to press the action. Dylan Dodrill put the Generals on the board, knocking in a long pass into the net at 16:14. But shortly later, Parkersburg's Sean McCloskey finished the scoring, knocking in the rebound of a hard shot from the right wing.

The game marked the end of the high school soccer careers of seniors Matt Wilton, Joey Richmond, Jeremy Harper, Brandon Posey, Drew Goodman and Billy Daly.
