Dental care guidelines for children and adults
A child should see a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than his/her first birthday.
A child should see a pediatric dentist for a check-up at least twice a year to prevent cavities and other dental problems.
Fluoridated toothpaste should begin being used when a child is 2 to 3 years old. Prior to that, parents should clean the child's teeth with water and a soft-bristled toothbrush. When toothpaste is used after age 2 to 3, parents should supervise brushing and make sure the child uses no more than a pea-sized amount on the brush. Children should spit out and not swallow excess toothpaste after brushing.
Have sealants applied when appropriate.
Make sure child has a balanced diet each day, including one serving each of: fruits and vegetables, breads and cereals, milk and dairy products, and meat fish and eggs. Limit the servings of sugars and starches.
Adults should brush teeth twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste.
Toothbrushes should be replaced every three or four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner.
Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.
