Metro High School's financial picture

February 28, 2009 @ 10:30 PM

Metro Early College High School in Columbus, Ohio, is the main model for a science, technology, engineering and math (or STEM) school being developed for Marshall University.

Its financial plan is one that West Virginia officials see as easily replicated.

Ohio State University provided the building and is paying the first four years of utility bills.

Battelle, the school's main business partner, provided startup costs and operating funds, which have decreased as the school has added students and received more per-student state aid. Initial startup costs were about $560,000.

Metro receives $6,300 from all but two of 16 nearby school districts for each student attending.

At full capacity (400 students), (and with the school on its own) it will cost about $9,300 per student per year, starting with the 2010-2011 school year.

Grants, business partnerships and help from the state is anticipated to cover the $3,000 gap between school district allocation and the actual cost per student.
