Local ATV group set to conduct free training

October 20, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

IRONTON -- The Hanging Rock all-terrain vehicle club, in association with the National 4-H ATV Safety Grant, All-Terrain Safety Institute, Ohio University Extension in Scioto County and the U.S. Forest Service's Wayne National Forest, is conducting a free ATV Rider Course from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.

It will take place at the new Bear Top rider safety training field located at the junction of State Route 522 and County Road 41 South in Lawrence County, Ohio.

The course provides a fast-paced, half day of hands-on training that includes pre-ride inspection, starting and stopping, quick turns, hill riding, emergency stopping and swerving and riding over obstacles. Riders also will learn about protective gear, local regulations, places to ride and how to ride forest trails.

"We're really targeting the younger users, which are most vulnerable to ATV accidents," said Regina Kuhn, OSU Extension 4-H Educator. "This course also is an excellent opportunity for families to increase their awareness of ATVs as well."

Students are asked to wear the proper riding gear at all times and bring the following: appropriate size ATV, DOT-approved motorcycle helmet, goggles or face shield, over-the-ankle boots, ATV or motorcycle gloves, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt or jacket.

Registration is due by Wednesday, Oct. 22, by calling 740-354-7879 or by e-mail at kuhn.484@osu.edu.
