Fire destroys Barboursville home

Oct. 02, 2013 @ 10:13 PM

BARBOURSVILLE — A homeowner escaped a house fire without injury in a rural area of Barboursville on Wednesday night.

The blaze was reported about 7:30 p.m. in the 7000 block of Mud River Road, according to Deputy Chief J.P. Hockenberry of the Barboursville Volunteer Fire Department.

Hockenberry said as firefighters arrived at the home, the garage was fully engulfed, and flames spread to the attic area and were shooting through the roof.

He said the department’s efforts to fight the blaze were hampered by the long distance to the nearest fire hydrant. A fire hose had to be extended approximately one-fourth of a mile, he said.

Hockenberry said a pet did not survive the fire.

The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation. At least 20 firefighters were at the scene. The Green Valley and Ohio River Road volunteer fire departments assisted Barboursville.
