Kidical Mass bicycle ride tours Huntington
HUNTINGTON -- Families took to the streets of downtown Huntington on their bicycles Sunday afternoon for the latest installment of Kidical Mass.
Kidical Mass is a community bicycle ride which Huntington resident Stacy Bisker began last year. Bisker is a bicycling advocate and writes her own cycling blog called "A Simple Six."
Sunday's ride began at Heritage Station and traveled to Harris Riverfront Park, where riders toured the Nina and Pinta replica ships docked at the riverfront. Afterward, the group rode to New York Bagel Cafe and Deli on 4th Avenue for hot chocolate before returning to Heritage Station.
The ride was the fourth installment of Kidical Mass since Bisker organized the inaugural ride about a year ago. Previous rides have gone through Ritter Park, Highlawn and the Southside to let families become more familiar with biking on roadways in their neighborhoods, Bisker said. The rides normally have a Huntington Police Department escort, although Sunday's ride didn't because the group used bicycle lanes on 4th Avenue.
"It's important for everyone to understand what the cycling options are for them in their community, and then they can formulate their own opinions," she said. "There are still a lot of people who don't know about the bike lanes on 4th Avenue, and others aren't exactly sure how to use them."
Bisker hopes to make Kidical Mass a monthly event. For more information, check out Bisker's blog at www.asimplesix.com/kidicalmass.
