Annual miniature exhibition continues

Nov. 23, 2012 @ 11:51 PM

HUNTINGTON -- While the artwork on display this weekend at the Renaissance Art Gallery is very small, it's apparent the talent and effort put into creating them is quite large.

The 12th annual National Miniature Exhibition is taking place at the gallery this weekend with more than 100 pieces of work on display.

The show features works by more than 50 artists from throughout the United States as well as foreign countries like Iran, but most of the work is done by local artists.

The pieces, all of which are contained in a 5-inch-by-5-inch or smaller square, were judged by a juror earlier this month, and most of the pieces are for sale, said Linda Helgson, a member of the gallery.

"I would say this is the perfect time of year for this exhibition because these miniature pieces make the perfect gift," Helgson said. "The prices begin at about $35, so they make a good gift that can fill just a small space in someone's life without being overwhelming to the person or the wallet. "The exhibition will run until Sunday, Dec. 9, and the gallery is open for Small Business Saturday on Nov. 24.

Guests will have the chance not only to purchase the works of art, but they also have the opportunity to register in an artwork giveaway in which one person will win a piece from the show. For those who choose to purchase art, the gallery offers a layaway plan.

The work ranges from abstract watercolor pieces to oil paintings and even miniature mixed media work.

"When people come here, we want them to say, 'I didn't realize there was so much talent in this area,'" Helgson said. "Of course, we also would like them maybe to think, 'I could produce something better than this.' Either one is acceptable because both notions encourage more people to participate in and create art, which is our biggest goal."

The Renaissance Art Gallery is located at the Renaissance Arts Center at 900 8th Street in Huntington, and it is accessible through the lower entrance of the building.

Hours are noon to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Renaissance Art Gallery is located at 900 8th St., Suite 20, Huntington.
