Teenager gets 30 years in S.C. murder
ST. GEORGE, S.C. -- A teenager originally from Huntington will serve nearly 30 years in prison for killing a woman in South Carolina.
Jonathan G. Coburn, 18, was sentenced Thursday by a circuit judge in Dorchester County near Charleston, S.C.
Assistant Solicitor Blair Jennings said Coburn will be eligible for release in November 2036.
Coburn was one of three men arrested in the Nov. 5, 2006, shooting death of Lisa Thompson. She was 25.
Jennings said investigators believe Coburn moved from the Huntington area to South Carolina in August 2006.
Authorities believe Coburn and co-defendant Vincent Payton tried to rob Thompson at the parking lot of the King's Grant Golf Course near Charleston. She, along with another man, were shot. Thompson died.
Coburn pleaded guilty this week to murder, assault and battery with intent to kill, Jennings said.
Payton pleaded guilty Wednesday to the same charges. The confession interrupted Payton's trial and came before Coburn could testify against his accomplice, Jennings said.
Matthew Turnmeyer was charged as accessory before murder in the case.
