Belle of Cincinnati allows visitors to cruise the Ohio
HUNTINGTON -- Debbie Gue likes to find unique things to do with her family. On Thursday afternoon she found just that, with a special cruise down the Ohio River.
"We're excited about it," Gue said as she stood in line to board the Belle of Cincinnati, a 1,000 capacity riverboat making its first sightseeing stop in Huntington in about four years.
Gue was waiting at Harris Riverfront Park to take the one-hour sightseeing cruise with daughter Beth Thornstrom and her 4- and 2-year-old grandchildren.
"This is my first time on a boat," Thornstrom said.
The family from Salt Rock said they always like to do different things, and the cruise was definitely not an everyday event.
Pat and Jim Weber of Chesapeake brought their 10- and 4-year-old grandsons to the riverfront for the trip.
"It's like a mini-vacation," Jim Weber said.
He also recalled a time when he boarded a similar boat, the West Virginia Belle.
Pat Weber said she looked forward to relaxing on the boat and watching the Ohio River.
Approximately 120 people began boarding the boat around 2:30 p.m., according to Josh Mehling, director of operations for BB Riverboats.
Mehling said the tour also stopped in Charleston and Huntington about four years ago.
"It's good to be back, and we're looking forward to doing this again next year," he said.
The Belle of Cincinnati also hosted a dinner cruise in Huntington from 7 to 9:30 p.m. It sold out with about 400 tickets distributed, Mehling said.
The Belle also stopped in Charleston on Tuesday and Wednesday. A dinner cruise in Ashland, Ky., is scheduled from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday.
