Centers for Independent Living host 5th annual Walk for Independence
The Mountain State Centers for Independent Living will host their 5th annual Walk for Independence today at Ritter Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m.
The walk brings awareness of the successes and the empowerment of people with disabilities through the community programs of Mountain State Centers for Independent Living. People with disabilities, their friends, neighbors, local businesses and their legislative representatives walk together to raise money to ensure the continuation of these important supports. Proceeds from the walk benefit the Community Services Program, which provides durable medical goods, ramps, and home modifications in order for people with disabilities to maintain their independence in their homes and communities.
The teams that are already registered are competing for the awards to be given including the team that raises the most money and the team with the most members. Teams and sponsors can also "adopt" a person on the waiting list to receive services. This allows someone to build a specific ramp, put in a specific walk-in shower or provide hearing aids to an "adopted" person. The waiting list can be found on the MTSTCIL Web site at http://www.mtstcil.org/walk/2008WaitList.pdf .
Additional information about the walk can be found at http://www.mtstcil.org/walk/ .
