Cabell County Fair brings parade to Milton
MILTON -- Up and down Main Street, plastic shopping bags were being put to good use Sunday afternoon as part of the annual Cabell County Fair parade.
Youngsters of all ages were filling up those shopping bags, pillowcases and other containers to hold dozens of pieces of candy and bubble gum tossed out by politicians and others riding in the parade to the hundreds of kids who lined Main Street on a hot, muggy Sunday afternoon.
"It's always good to get out and spend time with the family," said Keith Huffman of Barboursville who brought two of his kids and two grandkids to the parade Sunday afternoon. "We've been coming to the parade for the past five years or so."
Dari Grass of Culloden brought two children, Jordan, 12 and Caden, 5, to the parade. She also plans to take them to the Cabell County Fair this week. "We come to the fair every year," she said. "Our kids have friends who participate in 4-H. We come out to support them."
Robin Nelson of Milton has gone to the parade off and on for the past 20 years. Her husband was driving a float from Evergreen Baptist Church in the parade.
"We like to go to the fair and the Pumpkin Festival," she said. "My kids are 16 and 18 and they aren't here this year, but I'm still going to the parade."
Three-year-old D.J. Walker had a hard time standing still while he waited for the firetrucks and free candy and gum tossed to him by the parade participants.
"He knows no strangers," said his mom, Holli Walker of Milton. "He likes chasing the candy. He was in the parade last year with his pre-school class."
Jacob Napier, 8, of Milton was among those chasing down Tootsie Rolls, bubble gum, suckers, mints and other assorted candy. "I like it all," he said of the parade and the free candy.
"We usually go to the parade and to the fair," said his mother, Teresa Napier. "We'll probably go to the fair when they have the demolition derby. He likes to see the cars crash."
"This is the kickoff for the fair," said Kathy Bragg of Milton. "The way they give out candy, it's a lot like Halloween."
Missouri Queen of Milton brought her 4-year-old grandson, Brandon, to the parade for a little quality time. "He likes the firetrucks and the candy."
