Dentist honored with Legion of Merit award

HUNTINGTON -- One Huntington VA Medical Center dentist was recently honored with the Legion of Merit Award.

Dr. Eugene Riehle, chief of dental service at the medical center and retired colonel with the U.S. Army Reserves, was presented the award during a ceremony on May 27.

The Legion of Merit is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.

Dr. Riehle served one tour of duty in Afghanistan and two in Iraq. His longest and final tour, which lasted more than 15 months, was with the 3rd Medical Command unit in Iraq, where he was responsible for training medical personnel in preparation for assignments in the war zone.

He was cited for his excellent organizational skills as well as his personal training skills as applied in the field. He was also recognized for his calm performance under hazardous circumstances in Baghdad.
