Night of free music slated at Valley Park
HURRICANE, W.Va. -- Putnam County's Valley Park will be stage to a night of free, live entertainment starting at 6 p.m. today.
Suddenlink and Network West Virginia are hosting a free Concert in the Park event featuring the band Storm Crow, sponsored by Dr. Pepper and AEP's John Amos Plant. The band will play on stage at the park's amphitheatre with inflatables for the kids provided by H & H Enterprises.
Following the band's performance, when dark, the movie "Grease" will also be shown at the amphitheatre as part of the Putnam Park's summer cinema activities.
In addition, Parks will host another movie event Saturday, July 26, at the County Park in Eleanor, where "Transformers" will be shown in the park amphitheatre at the fairgrounds. The movie will begin after dark at approximately 8:45 p.m.
Golf scramble for Winfield girls basketball boosters
POCA -- The Winfield High School girls' basketball boosters and AEP John Amos will host a golf scramble on Tuesday, August 19 at Scarlet Oaks Country Club.
A putting contest is planned for 8:15 a.m. with an opportunity to win $2,500. The scramble event will start at 9 a.m. A hole-in-one contest, courtesy of NAPA, will give golfers a chance to win $10,000 or other great prizes on select holes. There will be a $400 cash prize for first place and $200 for second place. Other prizes will be offered in closest to pin, longest drive and a raffle held the day of the event.
The cost is $200 per team or $50 per player. Each golfer will receive a gift and lunch, sponsored by Thomas Memorial Hospital, at the conclusion of the tournament.
Hole sponsorships are available for $125, which includes professional signs printed and placed on various tees. Other sponsorship opportunities include donation of raffle items.

Real estate investors club forming
HURRICANE -- A real estate investors club is now forming for investors between Charleston and Huntington. A meeting will be held Tuesday, Aug. 12 in Hurricane to discuss what the participants would like to gain from the club and to decide if they would like to affiliate with a national organization.

Nitro women's club hosts basket bingo
NITRO, W.Va. -- The Nitro Women's Club will sponsor a Longaberger Basket Bingo on Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church activity building located at 22nd Street and 2nd Avenue in Nitro.
Doors open at 5 p.m. with bingo starting at 6 p.m. Parking is available behind the church.
Play 20 games for $25, plus special games will be available for an additional charge. Raffle tickets will be sold for the large hamper basket. Concessions will be available.
Please note: Players must be at least 18 years old.
Proceeds from this event will help fund community activities and scholarships.

Pre-K registration at new elementary
TEAYS VALLEY -- Pre-K registrations are now being accepted for the Pre-K class at the new elementary school in Teays Valley. Children must be 4 years old prior to Sept. 1, 2008. Priority will be given to students who live in the zone for the new school. Pre-k classes will start on Sept. 2.

Longaberger Heritage Days Bus Tour to benefit American Cancer Society
COLUMBUS -- Longaberger Basket enthusiasts are invited to see the place where it all began and benefit a good cause at the same time.
A Longaberger Heritage Days Bus Tour will leave Putnam County for an overnight trip to the Longaberger Homestead in Columbus on Friday, Sept. 5. Cost for the overnight trip is $179, and includes transportation, hotel stay, a Longaberger Basket, breakfast both days, a goodie bag with snacks, games, door prizes.
A single-day trip will leave on Saturday, Sept. 6. The $95 price includes transportation, a Longaberger Basket, breakfast, a goodie bag with snacks, games and door prizes.
All trips must be paid in full by July 31. All money is non-refundable, but transferable to a friend.
Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

Winfield show choir hosts bus trip to New York
NEW YORK -- You've voted for him. You've cheered for him. Now's your chance to see Putnam County's Derek Keeling perform as Danny in "Grease" on Broadway.
Winfield High School General Admission Show Choir boosters are sponsoring a "Greased Lightning" bus trip to New York to see the musical on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
It's a one-day trip with no hotel stay. A spot on the trip is $190, which includes an orchestra seating ticket to the show and a seat on the bus.
Participants will get some free time in the city to shop and dine. After the performance, Derek Keeling and possibly other cast members (which include "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks) will meet with the group.

Putnam schools hold final kindergarten registration
WINFIELD -- Putnam County Schools will hold its final kindergarten registration on Aug. 4 at the Putnam Career & Technical Center in Eleanor. Registration includes speech, vision and hearing screenings for those children who have not completed a health check with the child's physician. Registration is by appointment only.
Children must be 5 prior to Sept. 1, 2008, in order to register.
Parents or guardians should bring the child, the child's original birth certificate with a raised seal, proof of up-to-date immunizations, and the child's Social Security number. They must also provide proof of residency in the form of a current utility bill or mortgage or lease agreement.

Putnam pools marking down admission rates
HURRICANE -- Putnam County families are invited to enjoy local swimming holes at a discounted rate during two special days in August.
The Putnam County Parks and Recreation Commission invites you to explore the Waves of Fun water park or the County Pool at Eleanor on Wednesday, Aug. 6 and Wednesday, Aug. 13.
One-price admission will be offered from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. both days. All-day admission will be $4 at the Wave Pool (mini-golf included) and $1.50 at the County Park Pool.
There will be no rain checks.

Lakeside Elementary hosts student enrollment
HURRICANE -- Students new to Lakeside Elementary are invited to enroll for the 2008-09 school year on Tuesday, Aug. 5. Principal Tammy Dill and Secretary Mary Jo Harris will be available from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. to enroll new students.
Parents must present proof of residence (tax ticket, current utility, etc. with street address and name of resident), child's birth certificate (with a raised seal from the department of vital statistics), child's Social Security card and child's shot record.
School begins on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
West Teays offers new student registration
HURRICANE -- Early registration for West Teays Elementary School will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 8.
Please be sure to bring your child's birth certificate with raised seal, Social Security card, shot records, and a current utility bill for proof of residence.
Cub scout pack now accepting new members
WINFIELD -- Cub Scouts Pack 202, based in Winfield, is scouting for new members for the year 2008-2009. Boys in grades one through five this fall are invited to join the pack.
Pack 202 has two activities planned each month for this summer (free for registered boys at Pack 202) and weekly meetings and activities planned for this fall starting Sept. 2. Summer activities include a pool party and hiking. Some of the fall activities include participating in the Winfield Parade in September, as well as participating in the Raingutter Regatta and Pinewood Derby.

Basket bingo to benefit Buffalo High Football
BUFFALO -- Longaberger Basket Bingo to benefit the Buffalo High Football Team will be held on Friday, Aug. 8 at the Eleanor Town Hall above the Fire Department.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the games will begin at 7 p.m. Prizes will include great baskets, multiple specials and a grand special of 12 place settings of Longaberger Pottery Dishes.

FamilyCare offers free nutritional classes
There's one more chance to take a free Monthly Nutrition Class this summer at FamilyCare in Teays Valley.
Low Cholesterol Choices will be taught from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 13 at FamilyCare, 301-6 Great Teays Blvd. Scott Depot.
Other classes frequently offered at the center include Carb Counting for Diabetics and Low-Salt Choices.
