HUNTINGTON -- With a last sunny slice of an Indian summer outside, it's not easy to draw a crowd indoors on a Sunday afternoon.

But an enthusiastic crowd of more than 125 folks gathered inside Smith Recital Hall to be treated to a free concert by the well-traveled Marshall University Chamber Choir, under the direction of David Castleberry.

The choir, which performed at one of the world's most famous cathedrals this summer (Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral), presented its fall concert Sunday, featuring works by Mozart, Brahms, Vaughan Williams, Villa-Lobos and others.

With pianist Henning Vauth accompanying, the Chamber Choir took the audience back to Europe for a bit with works of Brahms, Mozart and Ralph Vaughn Williams' work, "Lord, Thou Hast Been Our Refuge."

Castleberry told the crowd about Williams (1872-1958), who would ride his bicycle throughout the English countryside picking up folk songs in pubs and various places and transposing them into interesting modern works also infused with some ancient modalities.

The choir worked its way up from the Renaissance to the 20th Century, beginning with Adrian Batten's stirring "O Sing Joyfully," and winding up with such works as Dominick Argento's "In Praise of Apollo" and Craig Hella Johnson's "Let the River Run."

The Marshall University College of Fine Arts' Department of Music continues its busy schedule of free concerts and recitals, which are open to the public.

At 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, there's a Graduate Recital for cellist Ezgi Karakus at Smith Recital Hall and a Delta Omicron Recital at the Jomie Jazz Forum.

At 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, there is a Cello Festival with Katja Janpoladyan at the Jomie Jazz Forum, and at 8 p.m., the MU Percussion Ensemble performs at Smith Recital Hall. Also at 8 p.m., the Freya String Quartet with Henning Vauth, piano, performs at the Jomie Jazz Forum.

At noon Friday, Nov. 15, the MUsic Alive Series features a free lunch-time concert of Quartet Plus One Freya String Quartet with pianist Henning Vauth at First Presbyterian Church, 1015 5th Ave.

At 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, there's a Junior Recital with Jake Arnoldt, saxophone, at the Jomie Jazz Center.
