Raffle benefits St. Joseph High
HUNTINGTON -- Representatives of St. Joseph High School took 500 numbers off a board one by one Saturday night, every 24 out of 25 marking that someone in the crowd had not won the raffle. Even though only every 25th number called would collect a prize, no one in attendance seemed concerned about the loss.
The 24th annual Reverse Raffle at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena featured all-you-can-eat hors d'oeuvres and an open bar with the purchase of a $100 raffle ticket. Five hundred tickets were sold to benefit the private high school.
"It helps St. Joe, that's the most important part," said Joan Foley, who said she had attended the event since it began. "My children went to St. Joe and now my grandchildren are going."
More than $16,000 in prizes were awarded from 7 to 11 p.m. while a 21-and-over crowd enjoyed crab-stuffed mushrooms, pieces of steak and chicken and other heavy hors d'oeuvres.
"It is one of our largest annual fundraisers, we just like everyone to have a really good time," said Myra Dailey, the development director of the school. "It's all volunteer-based and goes to the benefit of the children at the school. It helps students with tuition and anything needed at the building."
Dailey said the event typically drew $25,000 to $30,000 from ticket sales and donations. Patrick Finneran, principal of St. Joseph's, said the raffle also benefits the community.
"It really is a nice community event," Finneran said. "At St. Joe one of our goals is to be like a family. This is a great time to come out and see the family of St. Joe and just have a good time. We do not get federal funding, so we really rely on the kindness of the St. Joseph family."
The winners of the raffle were not released immediately, but would be available once the winners are notified.
