HUNTINGTON -- About two dozen high school students from around the Tri-State learned about the nature of diseases and other topics during a special program Wednesday at Cabell Huntington Hospital.

The Medical Explorers Post began at Cabell Huntington Hospital in May and meets monthly. The events last approximately an hour and a half and include workshops, hands-on activities and guest speakers.

The program gives young people a chance to identify what they are most interested in as a possible career, said Ann Kessinger, a volunteer for the program and human resources representative for Cabell Huntington Hospital.

"It allows them a chance to see physicians or nurses or technicians in action. This isn't something we feel can be taught in the classroom," she said. "We hope that the experience will give them insight as to what careers are out there."

Individuals ages 14 to 20 years old who are interested in pursuing a career in the medical field can find out more about the program by calling Kessinger at 304-526-2616 or e-mailing Andrea.Kessinger@chhi.org.

There is a $10 annual fee to join the program.
