Art student wins $1,000 in supplies after submitting work
HUNTINGTON -- Huntington High School sophomore Patrick Phillips plans on spending a lot of time honing his artistic skills after winning the inaugural Cup O Swank Studio "Tools of the Trade" competition.
The young artist was joined by his family during an award presentation on Tuesday at the Guyandotte Public Library in Huntington. Phillips won more than $1,000 in art supplies from Cup O Swank Studio in Huntington and Blick Art Materials, an Illinois-based art supply company that decided to contribute supplies after seeing Phillips' work.
"When I entered the contest, I never thought I'd win it," Phillips said. "It was a long shot."
Phillips, 15, submitted several drawings and an essay explaining his future in art for the contest. Kathy Ferrell, owner of the studio, said Phillips beat out 11 other competitors because his artwork, especially a portrait of musician Bob Marley, is very realistic and shows a lot of promise.
Huntington High art teacher Angela Snider Webb said Phillips works very hard on his artwork every day in class in an effort to improve his skills.
"He sets a very high bar for the rest of the students in class," Webb said.
Art supplies included paints, canvasses, easels and art books. Phillips, who mainly draws, said he looks forward to using all the different supplies and expanding his art. Phillips said his parents are considering giving him his own art room in their new house so that he can have space for his work.
With renewed invigoration, Phillips joked he'll go through the supplies in a month.
Aside from the supplies, winning the competition also affords Phillips the opportunity to show the art he created with the supplies at a month-long, solo show at the Guyandotte Public Library located at 203 Richmond St. in Huntington. The show will take place during the month of August 2010.
Phillips said he's excited about the solo show, which is something he has wanted to do since he started getting serious about drawing.
Ferrell said she hopes to have a competition every two years for high school students. The goal of the competition, she said, is to encourage genuine, marketable artistic development in Huntington. Ferrell said she hopes more kids participate in the next competition.
