Find an exercise buddy to keep up with routine

December 03, 2008 @ 08:10 PM

BARBOURSVILLE -- Working out with a friend could be the key to keeping up an exercise routine.

Cathy Daniel started going to Absolute Fitness in Barboursville with a friend in April. Not only have the two seen results, but training together with a personal trainer at least twice a week keeps them motivated, the 50-year-old said.

Daniel said the pair sometimes goes out to eat together, too.

"It helps us make the right choices," she said.

One local cross country and track and field coach said having that accountability is a big help.

"Going at a goal with someone or a group will enhance your ability to follow through with it," said Pat Riley, a coach at Barboursville Middle School.

Riley said group workout opportunities exist in the area, including the Huntington Road Runners Club, which meets weekly for runs, and Jeff's Bike Shop, which has group rides during the summer.

"These groups of people who get together and use one another to stay motivated and fit have organized themselves, are friendly and normally charge very low fees to join," he said.

Riley encourages people to participate in local races, too. A list of local races can be found at www.TriStateRacer.com.
