Man arrested in air conditioning, copper theft

Mar. 20, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

The following information was provided by criminal complaints filed in Cabell County Magistrate Court:

Jody Austin Newsome, 27, of Winfield, W.Va., was arrested this week and charged with felony nighttime burglary in connection with an incident that took place in February.

A Cabell County Sheriff's Deputy said a man living at a residence in the 2700 block of Benedict Road in Culloden reported on Feb. 22 that someone stole an air conditioning unit worth $5,000 and $300 in copper from his property on Feb. 21.

The man told the deputy he had an idea who the suspects were, and he hid in a barn on the property until about 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 22 when he saw a vehicle pull onto his property. Three people exited the vehicle and entered the barn looking for wire. The deputy said the man was able to identify the three suspects.

The suspect vehicle was pulled over by authorities in Putnam County, and they found copper wire, copper pipes and AC core inside of it.

Newsome's bond was set at $10,000.

Christopher Keith Dailey, 32, of Milton, was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and two misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance.

A Huntington police officer reported stopping a vehicle in the 1100 block of 16th Street on Monday. The officer said the driver had in his possession a pill container with 40 amphetamine pills. The name on the pill container was not the suspect's name, and the suspect did not have permission to have the pills, the officer said.

The officer reported the driver also was found to have a suboxone strip in his wallet, for which he did not have a valid prescription, and a small amount of meth.

Dailey's bond was set at $20,000.
