Hurricane scouts reach Eagle status
HURRICANE, W.Va. -- Over the past five months, five Boy Scouts from Hurricane's Troop 36 have each attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
Sharon Maynard is troop treasurer as well as a scout parent and says this is an amazing accomplishment considering only 2 percent of all scouts ever attain this rank.
Among those achieving the Eagle Scout rank are Ben Dillinger, a senior at Cabell Midland High School; Tanner Boster and Cameron Maynard, both sophomores at Hurricane High School; Andrew Oneil, a junior at Hurricane High and John Daly, a junior at Charleston Catholic School.
One of the requirements for receiving this rank was the completion of an Eagle service project rooted in giving back to the community. Dillinger did repair work and painting at the amphitheater in Eleanor City Park. Boster built two single-family picnic shelters for the Wave Pool Park in Hurricane. Maynard built a greenhouse for Hurricane Town Elementary School. Oneil created a walking trail for Hurricane City Park. Daly made a memorial garden for the Catholic Church of the Ascension in Hurricane.
Sharon Maynard, whose son, Cameron Maynard, has been a scout since he was in the first grade, said she's glad to see him involved with such a worthwhile and community-oriented group.
"He's learned skills that he probably won't get anywhere else," she said. Listing specifics such as survival skills, backpacking experiences and community project work time, Sharon Maynard said, "I think it's just a good healthy activity around a lot of good families and good values."
With the upcoming Civil War weekend scheduled for March 27 through 29 in Hurricane, the 30-plus member troop will be on hand serving the re-enactors meals as well as running a concession stand, helping with the information booth and assisting with crowd control, among other things.
The troop is always looking for new members as well as ideas for community projects to commit their time to.
