Major demolition set to begin at old Barboursville school

March 24, 2009 @ 09:25 PM

BARBOURSVILLE -- The old Barboursville Middle School will start coming down during the next few weeks as Master Mechanical Insulation gets its heavy equipment ready for demolition.

The old school will become a parking lot and bus loop for the new school, which opened in late-January behind the old facility.

After the new school opened, county staff cleaned out the old one. Then, MMI took over, taking out windows and doing asbestos abatement in preparation for demolition.

"You're starting to see more visible stuff moving in," said Cabell County Schools' Communications Director Jedd Flowers. "You are starting to see more bang."

Mike O'Dell, superintendent over operations, said the lot should be clear by the end of May. Then another company will come to excavate and do the blacktop work for the parking lot and bus loop. He hopes for it all to be complete for the opening of the new school year in August.
