Lawrence magistrate to retire
IRONTON -- John Kehoe, who has served as Lawrence County Common Pleas Court magistrate for about 25 years, will retire in early July.
Applications currently are being taken for a replacement, said Judge Charles "Chuck" Cooper. Applications will be taken through June 14, and a new magistrate could be named around June 24, Cooper said Wednesday.
The magistrate handles non-jury, non-criminal and financial cases including foreclosures, Cooper said. "The bulk of it is domestic relations, custody and divorce cases," he said.
The job has been posted at the Lawrence County Courthouse in Ironton.
Cooper and Common Pleas Judge D. Scott Bowling will confer on the appointment. The appointment is made by the two judges, Cooper said.
"We've had one or two applications thus far," Cooper said.
The magistrate has to be an attorney in legal practice for at least four years, he said. Resumes and applications can be sent to Cooper.
Kehoe is paid about $82,000 per year and the salary is based upon experience.
Kehoe was out of the office Wednesday and couldn't be reached for comment.
