Church takes donations for Iraqi orphans

November 18, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- First Presbyterian Church, 1115 5th Ave., Huntington, is collecting monetary donations to help a group of orphans in Baghdad, Iraq.

Community member and Marshall University professor Barbara Guyer said a friend in the Baghdad region has been helping the orphans. But since U.S. military has largely left the area, her friend reports help for the children has stopped.

The children need clothing and school supplies, including shoes and warm coats. A school that many of the children attend is staffed by volunteers who don't have money for school supplies.

Guyer's friend also said there is no orphanage, and children are sent to live with the closest relative, whether the relative wants them or not.

Anyone willing to help can send a tax-deductible donation to First Presbyterian Church, with "Children of Iraq" written in the memo line.
