Marshall named finalist for 'South's Best Tailgate'
HUNTINGTON -- Gameday festivities at Joan C. Edwards Stadium may not be the biggest, but they're among the best according to Southern Living magazine, which named Marshall University one of this year's top schools for tailgating in the South.
The contenders in the second-annual competition are featured in the September issue, hitting newsstands Aug. 23. Fans will ultimately determine the school that hosts "The South's Best Tailgate."
"In the South, pre-game celebrations matter as much as what happens on the field," Southern Living Editor-in-Chief Lindsay Bierman said. "We're asking readers to decide which school best honors our great tradition of Southern hospitality with the most stylish and spirited spread."
Of Marshall University, the magazine says, "The Thundering Herd goes big -- at home and away."
And Marshall isn't the only school in the state vying for the pre-game party crown. West Virginia University, described as "coonskin caps and crowds in perpetual John Denver sing-along," is also in the running.
Other contenders for the tailgate title are: Appalachian State, Clemson University, Florida State University, Louisiana State University, Oklahoma State University, Texas A&M University, University of Alabama, University of Georgia, University of Mississippi, University of Tennessee, University of Texas, Vanderbilt University and Virginia Tech.
The magazine chose its finalists based on the following criteria: Most Spirited -- Schools that turn "fan" into "fanatic;" Traditionalists -- Schools renowned for gameday rituals; Powerhouses -- Southern schools with a history of winning on and off the field (the most bowl victories); and Style Setters -- From sundresses to cake stands, these schools showcase true splendor in the grass.
Fans will determine which school hosts "The South's Best Tailgate" by voting daily through Sept. 30. Supporters wcan vote by clicking the "Vote for the South's Best Tailgate" link on the Southern Living website, www.southernliving.com.
Smartphone users with school spirit can also scan the corresponding image in the September issue with the Digimarc Discover app.
There is one vote per person, per day, and votes cast on Saturday's count twice. Voters will be entered for a chance to win $2,500 toward an ultimate tailgate. Southern Living will crown the winner of "The South's Best Tailgate" at a home game this fall.
