Group to provide support for lesbian, gay high school students

July 26, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- A new organization aims to provide support for local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered high school students.

The LGBT High School Student Alliance will have its first meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at the Java Joint, 1555 3rd Ave., Huntington.

The group, which plans to meet monthly around the city, plans to be a social and support group as well as an advocacy group, according to a release from the organization.

One of the organizers is Toodie Ray, a former English and creative writing teacher at Huntington High and a Huntington native. She sponsored the Huntington High organization before she retired. Since then, it has been disbanded.

"When I was the sponsor at Huntington High, I was overwhelmed at how important it was for the kids in the group to have that kind of 'official' support," Ray said in a press release. "Many students talked to me about how much it changed their school experience."

Another organizer is Layne Amerikaner, a former student of Ray's and one of the founders of Huntington High's gay-straight alliance in 2002

The Gay Straight Alliance Network, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps young activists to establish such alliances.
