Bolinger back on the job in Lawrence
IRONTON -- Det. Aaron Bollinger with the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department was back on the job Wednesday after a county grand jury found insufficient evidence to charge him in an officer-involved shooting earlier this year.
Johnny Lee Stapleton Jr., 28, of Ashland was shot and injured by Bollinger as officers of the Lawrence County Drug Task Force were attempting to arrest Stapleton on drug charges in June. Bollinger has been on administrative leave with pay since the shooting.
The case was investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal investigations and Identification. Lawrence County Common Pleas Judge Charles "Chuck" Cooper appointed Brenda Neville, a Chesapeake lawyer, to present the case to the grand jury. County Prosecutor J.B. Collier Jr. recused himself from the case since he oversees the drug task force.
"I anticipated this outcome," Collier said Wednesday. "Aaron Bollinger is one of the very best detectives I've had the privilege to work with in the past 20 years. He is a person of integrity and professionalism."
"We brought him back to work today," Sheriff Jeff Lawless said Wednesday. "We're glad to have him back. We've been short-handed while he's been gone."
The department only has two detectives.
Stapleton was named in a sealed indictment on three counts of trafficking in crack cocaine. A pre-trial in the case could be held later this month, Collier said.
He also faces serious criminal charges in Scioto County, Collier said.
Stapleton was shot in the face and forearm while he was sitting in his car, according to authorities.
