Five vehicles damaged in bridge crash

September 07, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Five vehicles received damage Monday afternoon in a crash atop the 17th Street West bridge connecting Chesapeake, Ohio, to Huntington, W.Va. The accident happened about 1:30 p.m.

At least four of the five vehicles were towed from the scene, said Huntington Police Lt. Joe Combs.

Charles Vaughn's car was one of the vehicles struck. He and Combs said a white, southbound mini-van crossed a double-yellow line to pass stopped traffic.

Vaughn, who was traveling north on the two-lane bridge, was sideswiped in the process.

Combs and Vaughn said southbound traffic had been stopped because of a disabled vehicle.

Combs said the van's driver told police he crossed into the oncoming lane because he was traveling too fast and was unable to stop. Witnesses told police the driver was impatient, Combs said.

The five-vehicle crash forced the bridge to be closed for more than an hour. That created additional traffic problems at the 6th Street bridge as motorists sought an alternative route.

No serious injuries were reported, Combs said.
