Old stacks come down at Barboursville brickyard

November 15, 2007 @ 11:53 PM

BARBOURSVILLE -- Phase two of the old brickyard cleanup project in Barboursville is nearly complete after six kiln stacks were demolished Thursday afternoon.

According to George Carico, coordinator of the Southern West Virginia Brownfields Assistance Center, a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Brownfields Program in 2006 has allowed the village to clean up the dilapidated Barboursville Clay/Brick Manufacturing Company.

After phase one, asbestos abatement, was completed in October, the village was given approval to continue with the project.

Carico said the debris from the demolition will be piled into an on-site landfill and covered with a soil cap. Now that the stacks have been brought down, Carico said the village will be focusing on subsurface petroleum issues and risk analysis. He said the testing and identification of petroleum on the brickyard site will ensure there is no future risk of unsafe materials on the property.

Though the project was initially delayed during the asbestos removal process due to issues with the contractors and awaiting approval from the environmental agencies, Carico said the project is moving forward.

"The demolition went very smoothly. The process is moving like clockwork now," Carico said. "This time next year the site will be on its way, and we will be looking for new development."
