5K Fun Run will help raise funds for mission trip to Honduras

July 04, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- The Inaugural Medical Mission 5K Fun Run scheduled for this month will help raise funds for a special mission trip to Honduras.

The 5K event will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 18, at Ritter Park. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. and costs $22 after Sunday, July 12, or $18 before.

In July, a group of students from Marshall University's School of Medicine will travel to Honduras to treat more than 1,500 impoverished villagers. The group will function like a mobile medical unit, setting up small clinics to diagnose and treat patients at no cost. Students will perform in-take, triage, medical consultations and fill prescriptions.

The club is part of a secular, international network of university groups called Global Medical Brigades that travel to developing countries to perform health care in communities without access to medicine otherwise.

To register, call Jacob Kilgore at 304-634-2448 or e-mail kilgore14@marshall.edu.
