Barboursville firefighters show off their new truck
BARBOURSVILLE -- Volunteer firefighters in Barboursville say the newest addition to their department is a credit to its community of supporters.
The new addition is a heavy duty rescue truck. The Barboursville Volunteer Fire Department purchased the truck with donations from citizens and businesses.
Lt. Andrew Frazier, the department's public information officer, estimates the new vehicle, including equipment, cost more than $400,000. He said the department simply outgrew the previous truck, which he estimated was 15 years old.
"Hopefully, this will last us another 15 years or more," he said. "We want the community to see what we are doing for them, changing with the times and getting some newer equipment."
The department received the truck in March and placed it into service in late spring. Frazier said its first extrication call was June 19.
Frazier said the department formed a committee so the new truck would meet the department's needs. It carries more equipment, including an XRT rescue system. Frazier said it allows firefighters to operate three hydraulic rescue tools at once. The older truck allowed only two tools at a time.
Frazier said many businesses contributed funding, including Home Depot, Sears and Wal-Mart.
The truck also was paid with property tax dollars the department receives each year from the county's excess levy.
The Barboursville Volunteer Fire Department serves the village and other neighboring areas, including Blue Sulphur, Pea Ridge and the Huntington Mall.
