Summer Motion to offer a variety of activities for all ages on nation's birthday

July 04, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

Some festivals say they have something for everyone.

Then there's Summer Motion.

Today, you can try out the world's largest pinball machine, watch a worm race, see a live cooking show and wrestling -- all in the majestic natural setting of Central Park.

The fun begins at 8 a.m. with Summer Motion's annual 10K race on 17th Street and Central Avenue, and the fun doesn't end until more than 14 hours later when the last fireworks have blasted off.

The park opens at 10 a.m. with all-day activities including: Games for children, inflatable rides, giant craft show, various exhibits, including Kentucky National Guard, food court with 15 vendors, science projects and demonstrations, David Browning as "The Mayberry Deputy," petting zoo from Honey Hill farm, The Living Treasures Animal and Reptile Exhibit, the world's largest pinball machine, Boyd County Public Library.

Live music begins at 11 a.m. with the Backyard Dixie Jazz Stompers and flows all day with The Reflections taking the stage at 8:15 p.m. before the fireworks.

Chuck Charles, president of Summer Motion, said in spite of challenging logistics, it has been a smooth transition to bring the nightly Summer Motion concerts to Central Park this year while Ashland's riverfront is undergoing a massive redevelopment project.

"My team, they thrive on problem solving -- that is what they do at their own jobs -- so this has worked out remarkably well," Charles said. "We have a have great venue with Ashland Central Park that we have highlighted and showed off and showed the people what kind of a diamond it is to have this level of concerts in the park."

While crowds are similar to years past for the national-act shows, Charles said they've heard a lot of great response from the crowd that's felt like they had a little more room to move, as well as more shade in the park.

Charles said today they're trying out several new things including a wrestling show and a live cooking show at 1 p.m. featuring two chefs Monty Lowans and Scott Sutton, of Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

"There's a lot of interest in these shows on the Food Network and Monty has had experience in Tennessee doing TV shows," Charles said. "This will be both entertaining and educational and something different. Our theory with this is to always have something for everybody whether it is cooking or wrestling."
