Gov.'s power over public broadcasting comes to end

August 03, 2009 @ 12:15 AM

CHARLESTON -- Gov. Joe Manchin's term as chairman of the agency that controls public broadcasting in West Virginia has expired, a quiet end to a tenure that began with political fighting.

Manchin secured legislation in 2005 that made him chairman of the Educational Broadcasting Authority, although some lawmakers feared he would interfere with programming and news gathering on state radio and TV.

Board member Mark Polen, though, says Manchin allowed the board to operate independently.

Manchin spokesman Matt Turner says the governor has no immediate plans to seek renewal of his chairmanship, but is leaving that option open.

The next board meeting is scheduled for September in Morgantown.
