Former MU coach named Boyd County district judge

November 20, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

CATLETTSBURG, Ky. -- Scott Taylor Reese, an assistant commonwealth's attorney and a former strength and conditioning coach at Marshall University, was named a Boyd County district judge Thursday by Gov. Steve Beshear.

Reese, 46, of Catlettsburg has served as assistant commonwealth's attorney for the past three years in the office of Commonwealth's Attorney David Justice. Beshear appointed him as district judge, Division 1, in Boyd County. Reese was named to serve the unexpired term of George B. Davis III, who was appointed earlier this year as Boyd circuit judge.

"I'm excited," Reese said Thursday. "It's been a humbling experience. It's humbling to see the support you have. It's a good opportunity to serve and have a chance to make a difference in the community."

Reese will be sworn in this weekend by Boyd Circuit Judge C. David Hagerman. A formal investiture for Reese will be held in Catlettsburg next week or the week after. His appointment runs through the end of 2010. Reese will have to file for election in the next few months for a full, four-year term.

He received his juris doctorate from Widener University School of Law in Pennsylvania and his bachelor's degree from Texas Tech University. He is married to Dr. Laura Reese, and they have two daughters.

Reese served as a strength and conditioning coach at Marshall University from 1990 to 1995 under former coach Jim Donnan.

His name was one of three submitted to the governor's office earlier this year by a Boyd County judicial nominating committee. Roger Hall, an Ashland lawyer, and Anna Ruth, a Boyd County attorney, also were nominated by the committee.

"I've known him since he started practicing law," Hagerman said Thursday afternoon. "He's the prosecutor assigned to my division. He's bright, extremely ethical and an extremely hard worker. I have no doubt whatsoever he'll do a terrific job for the people of Boyd County."

Reese said he's familiar with district court and juvenile court. The job will keep him busy. The district court has some 10,000 cases a year.
