OVEC activist Gunnoe honored for lifetime achievement
HUNTINGTON -- The David Bower Lifetime Achievement Award from the Land, Air, Water Association, the nation's oldest student environmental law society, has been awarded to Maria Gunnoe, anti-mountaintop removal activist and community outreach organizer for Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition in Huntington.
Gunnoe received the honor Sunday, Feb. 28, at the Public Interest Environmental Law Conference in Oregon after delivering the keynote address.
The David Bower award is named in honor of the former executive director of the Sierra Club. It is given annually to honor activists and lawyers who exemplify Bower's vision and initiatives. Past recipients include folk singer and activist Pete Seeger, wildlife and wildlands preservationist Lou Gold and West Virginia University law professor Patrick McGinley.
The daughter of coal miner, Gunnoe was born and raised in Boone County. Her current work includes the potential purchase of property to create an education center for people in southern Appalachia to combat mountaintop removal. The web site is www.mtstopshere.com.
