Ala. murder suspect captured in Huntington
HUNTINGTON -- A 17-year-old murder suspect from Jacksonville, Ala., was captured early Friday morning in Huntington, according to West Virginia State Trooper W.G. Hash.
The juvenile suspect was identified as Travis Lamar Wilson Jr., according to The Gadsden Times' account of a press conference held Friday, March 12, by authorities in Gadsden, Ala.
The juvenile was arrested about 1:45 a.m. in Marcum Terrace. Hash said local authorities received a be-on-the-lookout alert about 11 p.m. Thursday from Alabama. It included specific locations about the suspect's possible whereabouts.
The West Virginia State Police and Huntington Police Department joined efforts. Local officers staked out positions at each location. The suspect was arrested within three hours of the alert.
"It was a swift response," Hash said. "Two and a half hours from the bolo, that's pretty aggressive."
Wilson was processed at the State Police Huntington detachment, arraigned at the Cabell County Courthouse and transported to the James H. "Tiger" Morton Juvenile Center in Dunbar, W.Va. He is being held pending extradition to Alabama.
Gadsden Police Sgt. Tom Bradley said Wilson would be tried as an adult, according The Gadsden Times.
The newspaper reports the alleged shooting took place about 12:45 a.m. Sunday in Gadsden. City police in Gadsden identified the deceased as Christopher Lashun Hoyt, also 17.
Hoyt was shot as his group left a party. They were confronted by another group and a fight broke out. At least one gunshot was fired, and Hoyt was struck in the back, The Gadsden Times reports.
Friends rushed Hoyt to an area hospital, but The Gadsden Times reports he died a short time later.
The juvenile suspect, surprised to see police, was taken into custody without incident, Hash said. Local authorities feared the juvenile would be armed, but that was not the case.
Hash said authorities in Alabama indicate their victim died from a .40-caliber gunshot wound to the chest. The gun has not been recovered.
Investigators believe the juvenile suspect sought refuge with relatives in Huntington. He is not a West Virginia native, but knew he had relatives residing in the area.
