Tomatoes of all shapes, sizes celebrated at festival

August 08, 2009 @ 11:00 PM

HUNTINGTON -- Debbie Shoemaker of Scottown, Ohio, grows big tomatoes and occasionally ugly ones.

Shoemaker won $200 Saturday at the tomato festival at the Central City Farmers Market on West 14th Street. She also won last year for the biggest tomato. Shoemaker, who has more than 3,000 tomato plants at her Lawrence County farm, trimmed off some limbs and staked out the tomato that weighed 2.97 pounds.

Tim Harper of Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va., who has more than 15,000 tomato plants, said Saturday was the best day this summer at the farmers market. "It has been slow, but today was good," the Mason County resident said.

He brought watermelons, cantaloupes, squash, red and yellow tomatoes, and beans, among other things to the market. The half-runner beans sold out quickly, he said. "It's all local, home-grown produce."

Debbie Shoemaker, right, won for the biggest tomato and Lorene Plybon, left, the second biggest tomato at the Tomato Festival at Central City Saturday.
