MADD 'Touch a Truck' fundraiser a success

August 13, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

CHARLESTON -- Touch a Truck, the family fun fundraiser put on by Mothers Against Drunk Driving WV in early August, had 200 adult and child visitors viewing and climbing into 21 vehicles, according to a release from the organization.

Operators opened doors and cupboards, lifted hoods, sounded horns and made cranes and lifts move. Children received MADD balloons, Miners Heath and Safety fans and Waste Management balls, among other giveaways. Jeb Corey appeared as "Captain Cab" with the latest C&H taxicab. Fire trucks came and went, with two present for part of the day.

Waste Management gave away a toy Waste Management truck to a little boy who knew the name for every part of one of their trucks.

Unicycle Performances Unlimited charmed children with feats of skill while balancing on one wheel.

BWAB International arrived with a shiny, new, all-chrome mine truck. Claxton Smith and Sons Concrete brought a "backward" mixing truck.

The tallest truck was brought by All Crane and Equipment Rental. They raised and lowered the long crane and dropped a ball to the delight of viewers.

Next to them was a smaller crane brought by Anderson Equipment Company. Verizon brought a lift truck and showed how it can be started from three different points -- the back, inside the lift and inside the cab.

A more sobering tour were the insides of the mine rescue truck brought by the Department of Miners Health, Safety and Training and the smoke-filled Safety House trailer brought by the Charleston Fire Department.

Children flocked to the Charleston Police Department police car and motorcycle when sirens were set off and lights flashed. The West Virginia National Guard jeep was another favorite for children to sit in and pretend to drive.

The most vehicles were brought by the city of Charleston Public Works Department. They brought a garbage truck, dump truck and backhoe and showed how they worked.

At the end of the day, a number of prizes were raffled off. Raffle items were provided by Tri-State Racetrack, Waste Management, Kelly's Men's Shop, YMCA of Kanawha Valley, Pile Hardware, Lowe's, South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena and Office Max. Papa John's Pizza donated lunch and Alleghany Products donated water for truck operators and community volunteers.
