Spotlight: For all you do, this day's for you

Nobody works and loves like a mom, so this weekend, it's time to play hard as well.

Mother's Day rolls in Sunday ,and there's some good fun to be had with your mama.

Mom and Me Fashion Show: At 1 p.m. Saturday, the Huntington Mall hosts a "Mom & Me Fashion Show" and the Fifth Annual Mother/Daughter Look-A-Like contest at the Macy's Dome. Registration fee is a $30 donation to the March of Dimes. Support your community and win some great prizes.

Greenbo Buffet: Treat mom to a great meal in a beautiful setting with a trip to Carter Caves or Greenbo Lake State Resort Park. They're serving up the almost-famous Mother's Day buffet from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 11. Enjoy choice beef carved on the line, succulent roast pork with apple dressing, chicken and dumplings and fried catfish and hush puppies. Cost is $14.95 and $6.95 for children 6 to 12. Mountain Stage Mother's Day Concert: West Virginia University and West Virginia Public Broadcasting are teaming up to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mother's Day. A special Mountain Stage performance featuring musical mothers is set for 7 p.m. Sunday at the International Mother's Day Shrine in Grafton, W.Va. Scheduled to perform are Lucy Kaplansky, Rory Block, the Nichols Family Trio, and Sara Hickman. Also on the bill are The Hillbilly Gypsies. Go online at www.mountainstage.org.

Down on the Farm: Road-trip with mom to the 1,000-acre Bob Evans Farm in Rio Grande, Ohio, on Saturday. There's a Landscaping Workshop from 8 a.m. to noon with two seminars and a plant exchange. John Marra will give folks tips on lawn, tree and shrub care. It's free and open to the public. Also, check out the new quilt exhibit in the Homestead Museum, the new Quilt Blocks on the barn, as well as the arts and crafts building and hiking trails. Call 800-994-3276.

Some Texas-Sized Laughs

Born and raised in Portland, Texas, Steve Trevino started comedy at his second grade talent show.

The twenty-something is still behind the mic, and still getting the laughs.

Trevino, who's toured nationally with Carlos Mencia's Three Amigos Comedy Tour, is live at the Funny Bone Comedy Club and Restaurant, at Pullman Square, Thursday through Sunday.

Tickets are $12 for Thursday and Sunday and $14 for Friday and Saturday.

Trevino, who now lives in L.A., continues opening shows for Carlos Mencia across the country, and is a colloborator on "Comedy Central's Mind Of Mencia."

Get Wilder at the V

Don't just get wild Friday night, get Wilder.

Blind Pig recording artist Webb Wilder and The Beatnecks will be bringing its rollicking live show to Huntington's V-Club, 741 6th Ave.

Wilder, who plays both kinds of music Rock and Roll, just notched up the No. 1 CD on the Roots Music Report for his live record and Blind Pig debut, "Born to Be Wilder."

Known for his eclectic, road-house blues, Wilder and his band have notched up more than 20 years as a unit.

Lawrence County, Ky., rockers Super Chimp (formerly Night Train) will be opening the show.

A mountain of a tenor

When you talk bluegrass music's best traditional tenor singers, the name Don Rigsby often ends up on the top of the heap.

Rigsby, the ruby-throated Elliott County, Ky., resident brings his band, Midnight Call to the Mountaineer Opry House in Milton at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets are $12 and $10 for seniors.

Rigsby, who is just back from gigs in Germany and Switzerland, has been twice nominated for Grammy Awards and is a two-time SPGBMA Traditional Male Vocalist of the Year and also sang on a Grammy-winning album by rocker John Fogerty.

Throw mama on the raft

Class VI River Runners and Smokey's on the Gorge Sunday, May 11, for a day of fresh air and sweet treats. Some proceeds go to The Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research. The Mother's Day raft trip special allows mothers to raft free with one paying guest.

Off the river, Smokey's on the Gorge is serving a brunch and dinner menu from noon to 8 p.m. that includes something to suit every taste. Brie-stuffed quail, herb encrusted pork loin, grilled beef tenders and roasted monkfish star on the buffet.

OU brings the school of dance to Paramount

The Paramount Arts Center high steps into another Youth Education Series show by welcoming in the Ohio University School of Dance for a special noon performance, Monday, May 12.

Tickets are only $3. The show is geared toward grades five to 12 and advance reservations are required for school groups.

Tickets are also available to the public as space permits.

The 11 dancers will showcase their interest in a wide variety of creative movement expression from narrative dance to dances that explore contemporary issues to dances about the beauty of movement as a purely aesthetic experience.

We've Got American Spirit

A visit to the jewel of a museum on the hill, The Huntington Museum of Art always lifts the sagging spirits of the early week grind.

Tuesdays are free at the museum and boast the museum's longest hours, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Come and soak in the new exhibits including the 50-piece American Spirit exhibit that features works selected from a large collection of more than 4,000 works by noted American and European artists including Andy Warhol, George Catlin, George Caleb Bingham, W. Eugene Smith, Eudora Welty and Roy Lichtenstein.

Check out Paul Levy's 15 screen prints "Bill of Rights," that visually depict the rights of Americans granted under the Constitution.

Also, check out an exhibit in the Bridge Gallery by Art Werger, the Gropius Masters Workshop Series artist.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday; noon to 5 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Comedians, Start Your Engines

Are you always making your co-workers or family bust a gut laughing?

Well, have we got the contest for you.

The Comedy Zone Charleston has started a month-long quest to find the funniest person in the Mountain State.

Started up last Wednesday, amateur comedians from West Virginia and surrounding areas will compete for a chance to win the title. The five-week competition will be held every Wednesday and is open to the public. Admission is $5 and a full menu is available.

Each week's two top performers will advance to the final showdown on June 11. The Final Showdown winner will get paid emcee time during future Comedy Zone Charleston shows. The winner also gets a paid gig at another Comedy Zone and will be reviewed by Heffron Talent agents.
