New recruits commit to Herd
HUNTINGTON — An imposing defensive tackle and one of the nation’s top-ranked linebacker playmakers verbally committed to Marshall University football on Sunday.
Following official visits, Colton Griffis and Phil Walker joined the Thundering Herd’s prospective recruiting class. Griffis is a 6-foot-6, 300-pound tackle from Ohio high school state power Big Walnut; Walker, a 6-1, 208-pound standout from Cypress Bay H.S. (Fla.), is rated as the No. 77 weak side linebacker prospect by Scout.com.
Griffis led Big Walnut to the 2007 Division II state title and earned first team all Ohio Capital Conference honors as a senior. Walker also was offered scholarships by Kansas State, Iowa, Tulsa, Syracuse, Northern Illinois and Central Michigan.
Marshall also has received commitments from prep prospects Zakee Bashir, a linebacker from Walnut Ridge (Ohio); Huntington H.S. athlete C.J. Crawford; South Charleston H.S. wide receiver Aaron Dobson; Austin H.S. (Ala.) wide receiver Freddie Moore; Providence H.S. (N.C.) linebacker Matt Pickett; Independence H.S. (N.C.) wideout Michael Rhynes; Harrisonburg H.S. (Va.) defensive end James Rouse; and former Oscar Smith H.S. (Va.) wideout Jamal Wilson.
