Huntington Symphony visiting local schools

October 17, 2009 @ 10:35 PM

BARBOURSVILLE -- Barboursville Middle School was among numerous stops the Huntington Symphony Orchestra is making as part of its school program.

Seven members of the orchestra visited Friday, focusing on engaging students in the fine arts. Each Tuesday and Thursday at 9 and 11 a.m. through November, the orchestra performs for elementary students at the Huntington Museum of Art.

Hogan Haas, who plays in the orchestra, said every middle and elementary school student in Cabell and Wayne counties will be introduced to the symphony either through the museum or by school visits.

The Huntington Symphony Orchestra will perform at a family concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center. Haas said 12 children will be called up to get a shot at playing various instruments during the show, known as "Silly Symphony."

Some of the music includes numbers from famous cartoons, such as Tom & Jerry. And 10 Marshall students will dress up in cartoon character costumes before the concert.
