Sep. 25, 2013 @ 09:38 PM

OLIVE HILL, Ky. — Carter Caves State Resort Park will host its Tygart Gorge and Arches Hike on Sept. 28.
This is approximately a 9-mile excursion on moderately difficult terrain.

Following a short shuttle ride provided by the park, you will trek from the high elevations into a gorge created by Tygart Creek.  After hiking through an old homestead that was inhabited by a well-known moonshiner, you’ll cross Tygart Creek by foot. Then you’re off to a swinging bridge over the cascading tailwaters of Smoky Lake through the old Johnson homeplace and over another swinging bridge crossing Smoky Creek.

You will continue on the trail that leads through four natural bridges found around Carter Caves State Park to the final destination at the park’s welcome center.

Required equipment includes a sack lunch, good hiking boots, footwear for crossing the creek, several bottles of water and a backpack to carry your equipment.

There is a $12 fee for this hike. Registration is required. Call the park at 1-800-325-0059 for more information and to make reservations. Meet at the welcome center at 9:30 a.m.
