Wayne health official hopes flu clinic goes smoothly

October 29, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

WAYNE -- Mickey Plymale is urging area residents not to panic before Wayne County's first H1N1, or swine flu, vaccine clinic on Saturday.

"We encourage them not to think they have to be there as soon as the door opens," said Plymale, administrator for the Wayne County Health Department.

Instead, Plymale hopes the clinic will have a steady flow of people throughout the day. He said staff have approximately 1,500 vaccines to administer from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at the new Wayne Elementary School near Wal-Mart. Only those people who are pregnant or between the ages of 6 months to 24 years old are eligible to be vaccinated at Saturday's clinic. Other groups will be vaccinated at later dates.

Plymale said the Wayne County Health Department is scheduled to receive weekly vaccines following this weekend's clinic, and staff expect that everyone who wants to be vaccinated will eventually be able to.

He said this weekend's doses are about half nasal flu vaccine spray and half injections. He said anyone who qualifies for the nasal spray will be asked to take it so that enough injections will be available for those who may not qualify for the spray.

He said the clinic may also move more quickly if people fill out registration forms in advance. People can print forms at www.waynehealthdept.org and fill them out and bring them to the clinic. People age 21 to 24 years old should bring identification to prove their age.

Children who are brought to the clinic by someone other than their parent or legal guardian must have signed permission statements from the parent or guardian allowing the children to be vaccinated.
